Derico D. Watson began playing percussion
at the age of six. A few short years later he played regularly at his
grandmother's church in Muskegon, MI. Derico remembers, "I always
liked to play to my grandmother's records using Quaker Oats boxes,
coffee cans, you name it, for my toy drum set. I was told then
that I had an exclusive gift from God for this ministry!"
At the age of thirteen, Derico learned
how to read music at Steele Midde School. He later went on to graduate
from Muskegon High School where he
performed in the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Bands.
Derico has been influenced and inspired by many different artists.
He has studied with countless numbers of musicians including
Tim Froncek and JD Blair. Watson has performed with artists such
as Cornell Burton, Marvin Sapp, Beverly Crawford, Jeff Coffin, Steve
Bailey, El Buho, Bela Fleck and Victor and Regi Wooten. Watson
also performs with The Rick Hicks Band, His Image and his own
band The Derico Watson Group which has appeared with James
Brown, Spyro Gyra, Nelson Rangell and Earth, Wind and Fire.
Currently, Watson endorses Paiste Cymbals, Aquarian
Accessories and Vic Firth drum sticks. Watson plans on
continuing to teach, perform, record and tour throughout the world
promoting music education and the love of Jesus Christ through the
percussion instruments.
